Season of Love

In my inaugural year of teaching, my co-teacher introduced our class of 30 Kindergarteners to the enchanting melody of "Seasons of Love" from the musical Rent. Rather than adhering to the conventional tunes of Judeo-Christian festivities and mid-century carols, she chose a song that delves into themes of capitalism, queerness, the AIDS epidemic, and the transformative power of community and love. With every note and lyric committed to heart, our students fervently prepared to perform this unconventional anthem at the school holiday show.

For me, this song transcended its musical origins and became a cherished ritual. From that moment onward, as December 1st approached, every class I taught embraced the poignant lyrics of "Seasons of Love." The holiday season in my classroom evolved into a celebration of heightened love, kindness, and joy. It served as a poignant reminder to our community of caregivers of the extraordinary significance embedded in each moment of growth, both within and beyond the confines of the school day.

As we embark on this Season of Love, let us carry forth the lessons learned – that love knows no bounds, kindness is a gift we can endlessly bestow, and joy is a melody that resounds through every moment of shared growth.
